Children’s Concert Coming to LM Theatre
La Mirada~La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts continues its 2009-2010 Programs for Young Audiences series with 3-Time Grammy Award Winner Tom Chapin in Concert. Performances are Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
Nicknamed "the Pied Piper of Children's Music" by Parents Magazine, Tom Chapin's live performances engage the hearts, minds and imaginations of children and adults alike. Tom has gained widespread critical and popular acclaim for his recordings aimed at 4 to 11 year-olds and their families. Tom and his collaborators John Forster, Michael Mark and Jon Cobert have created a body of songs, which are quickly becoming children's classics. His family albums have been recognized with awards from the American Library Association, Parents' Choice, the New York Music Awards, the National Association of Parenting Publications and Parents Magazine. Five of his family recordings have received Grammy nominations for Best Musical Album For Children.

FROM OUR FILES: Check out this reader/listener comment I received about six years ago about. Recently many of you have asked about the 'La Mirada Song' that used to be played at the La Mirada Drive-In. This may be it.
The words and music were written by Don Hecht and copyrighted in 1958 by Sage and Sage Music Publishers in Hollywood:

Gillett Scores 28; Mats Still Lose
Lakewood~After winning the first two games in league, the Matadores seemed to be off to a good start.
So much for that.
After winning its first two against John Glenn and Bellflower, the new-look Mats have looked a little troubled lately.
Last night, Conner Gillett scored 28 poiints, but the turnover-prone Mats could not keep up with the Monsoons of Mayfair, losing 72-59. This followed a difficult loss to Artesia at home two nights earlier.
Shooting on San Ardo Drive
La Mirada~An unidentified man was shot in the 14900 block of San Ardo Drive around 6:40 this evening.
When deputies arrived, the victim was uncooperative.
Moments later, police detained and arrested at gunpoint, six males on Springview Drive, just north of Imperial Highway in unincorporated Whittier. The individuals were believed to be involoved in the shooting on San Ardo.
Other potential suspects got away on Springview, and a temporary containment ensued.
Matadores Stay Unbeaten in League
Bellflower~The La Mirada Boys Basketball team improved to 2-0 in league by beating Bellflower tonight, 61-52, at Bellflower.
La Mirada outscored the Bucaneers 20-6 in the third quarter and never looked back. Isaac Luatua scored 19 points for the Mats who improved to 8-9 overall.
Next up for the Boys in Blue will be a home game vs. Artesia Monday January 11th, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Splash! Into the New Year at the Polar Bear Plunge
La Mirada~The word "Plunge" enjoys a special sentimental place in the hearts of people who have lived in La Mirada for a long period of time.
It now takes on a new meaning.
Take the plunge into the cold waters of Buccaneer Bay at Splash! on New Year’s Day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The third annual Polar Bear Plunge will allow those daring enough to be among the first in 2010 to plunge down the 25-foot waterslides into an unheated catch pool.
Adventurers will receive a photo taken of the plunge down the slides, hot chocolate, and admission to recreational swim in the heated 25-yard pool from noon to 5 p.m. The adventure is available for $5 and is free for 2010 season pass holders.
Those who prefer warmer waters can enjoy the heated 25-yard pool from noon to 5 p.m. at the cost of $3 for adults and $2 for children and seniors. Hot chocolate, coffee, and mochas will be available for purchase.

Siemens and Luatua Deal Out the Points in Vegas

Las Vegas~After winning its first two games, the La Mirada boys basketball team lost this evening, bowing to Coronado in the third round, 56-55 in a heart-break thriller, at the 2009 Prep Championships in Las Vegas.
Josh Siemens had 15 points and Isaac Luatua added 13 in the frustruating defeat.
Luatua, who helped lead La Mirada to a CIF Football Championship (on both sides of the ball), just two weeks ago, has become a major player in the Mats basketball plans. The 6' 3" 290 lb. junior uses his wide body and soft shooting touch to his advantage.

La Mirada 49 Garden Grove 27: Well the game started off as bad as it could for the Matadores, because they couldn’t find a way early to stop the high powered offense of 
Garden Grove that was led by QB Sean Young. That was, until Young was put out of the game for good. Then, Garden Grove seemed to have no contingency for Young getting hurt, and where unable to find any offense to keep their lead. The Matadores offense got going behind their massive offensive line and the hard running of running backs JT Torres, and Max Gama. The Matadores defense stepped up, and the offense rolled off 42 unanswered points. It was not until garbage time that Garden Grove scored another TD. They fought valiantly as they could, and did a great job honoring the memory of Kevin Telles who passed away earlier this season. The Matadore offensive line has done a great job this year, paving the way for their running game.
Next Season Preview
Artesia: 1-9 Overall (League 1-5)
The Pioneers where rocked by turmoil, and injuries this season and they where never able to recover. They will only return 19 players next season and they lose their best players on defense in MLB T.J Taimutuia, and OLB Adam Leutele. They also lose both QB’s that ran the team this season. They did not field a junior varsity team this year, and they also where unable to field more than 20 kids on the freshman team. They are going to struggle mightily.
Key Losses: QB Anthony Johnson, TB David Lasisi, LB T.J Taimutuia, Adam Leutele, ATH Montez Hunter, WR/CB Travon Payne.
Key Returners: While several players played varsity, none of them look to be major contributors next season.
Los Coyotes Assembles for La Mirada Symphony Ensemble
La Mirada~On December 10 the students from the GATE program at Los Coyotes Middle School in La Mirada were presented a performance of a wind instrument ensemble as a special music enrichment treat for this Holiday Season. The students were introduced to the Flute, Oboe, French horn, Bassoon and Clarinet demonstrated and played by members of the La Mirada Symphony Orchestra in a program of various styles and musical genres.
The instrumental ensemble visits are a part of the Enrichment Programs for Youth that the Orchestra makes available upon request to bring fine music to the students to enhance the school's music curriculum.
Other programs include: two free daytime concerts open to private and public schools in the area; opportunity for Honor Band students to play on stage with the orchestra at the student concerts and at the Matinee POPS concert for the community; and, participation in a competition for instrumental students to be awarded the opportunity to perform at the student concerts.

News From El Camino High School
La Mirada~New club on campus! Positive Alternative Outreach Program with Advisor Mr. Oscar Diaz, who is sponsored by the Living Faith Church.
Community events for the month of December:
1. Toys For Tots Annual Toy Drive-working with the Los Alamitos Marine Base. Toy contributions are being taken through Dec. 18th. at El Camino High School. Volunteers are needed at the Los Alamitos Army/Marine Reserve Base, from 8am to 2 pm on December 19th.
2. Canned Food Drive was a big success! It ran from December 4th through December 16th. All food and can contributions will go to Living Faith Church, who will then distribute the food items to the community.
The last day of school before Winter Break is Friday, December 18th. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm. This is a minimum day for all students. School will resume again on Monday, January 4, 2010.
